Men’s College Roundup: Top Teams and Athletes in College Volleyball

This week’s college volleyball roundup brings you the latest updates on the top teams in the country across divisions. We’ll highlight some key matchups from the past week and also shine a spotlight on the talented athletes who are part of the USA Volleyball National Team Development Program.

NCAA Division I/II

No. 1 Hawaii

The Hawaii team remains undefeated with a perfect 9-0 record after sweeping a weekend doubleheader at Stanford. They emerged victorious in both matches, winning 3-0.

  • Kills: Dimitrios Mouchlias (17)
  • Blocks: Cole Hogland (6)

Next Up: Hawaii will be hosting Concordia-Irvine for two consecutive games starting on Thursday night.

No. 2 UCLA

With a record of 11-1, UCLA continues to impress. They defeated Long Beach State in both ends of a home and away two-game matchup.

Next up for UCLA: They will be hosting BYU for two games this weekend, starting on Friday night.

  • Andrew Rowan, who was named AVCA National Player of the Week, was part of the 2022 U21 National Team and has shown exceptional skills with 37 assists and 2 blocks against LBSU.
  • Grant Sloane, a member of the 2022 Men’s Collegiate National Team and the 2021 U.S. Men’s National Team, put up an impressive performance with 3 digs, 2 blocks, and 2 kills against LBSU.

No. 3 Penn State

Penn State now holds a 9-1 record following their victory over St. Francis last week.

Match Leaders vs. SFU:

  • Kills: John Kerr (15)
  • Digs: Cole Bogner (17)

Next up: Penn State will be facing off against Princeton at home on Friday night.

Notable Penn State Players:

  • Brett Wildman, a member of the 2022 U.S. Men’s National Team, showcased his skills with 2 blocks, 5 digs, and 5 kills against SFU. He was also a part of the bronze-winning team at the Pan Am Cup and the Pan Am Cup Final Six.

No. 4 Long Beach State

Long Beach State suffered two losses to UCLA at the end of last week, bringing their record to 6-2.

  • Blocks: Simon Thorwie (6) – Currently the country’s leader in blocks per set (1.571)

Notable Long Beach State Players:

  • Mason Briggs, a member of the 2022 U.S. Men’s National Team, contributed greatly with 17 digs and 9 assists against UCLA. He is also ranked No. 3 in the country in digs per set (2.89).
  • Clarke Godbold, named AVCA National Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 29, showcased his skills with 10 kills and 6 blocks against UCLA. He has twice been named to the U.S. Men’s U21 National Training Team and competed at the FIVB U19 World Championship in 2019. He is currently No. 7 in the country in blocks per set (1.179).

No. 5 Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon remains undefeated with a perfect 11-0 record after defeating Arizona Christian last week.

Juniata holds an impressive 12-0 record after defeating Marymount (Va.) last Friday.

No. 2 Stevens

After suffering their second loss of the season to No. 4 Carthage on Friday, Stevens bounced back with two consecutive wins in the Aurora Tri-Match last weekend.

No. 3 Springfield

Springfield holds a solid 10-1 record after their victory over NYU last week.

Next up: Springfield will be on the road for a meeting with No. 5 Vassar on Thursday night.

No. 4 Carthage

Carthage improved to 7-3 with a win over previously ranked No. 1 Stevens on Friday.

  • Aces: Mitch Geiger (4)

Next up: Carthage will be in Milwaukee to take on the MSOE Raiders on Thursday night.

No. 5 Vassar

Vassar holds an impressive 8-1 overall record, with seven consecutive wins after recent victories against Ramapo and Eastern Nazarene on Saturday.
