Beach Duos Qualify for the FIVB U19 Beach Worlds

The teams of Tim Brewster-John Schwengel and Devon Newberry-Lindsey Sparks emerged as champions in the USA Volleyball Beach HP U19 World Trials at the Chula Vista (Calif.) Elite Athlete Training Center. This victory secures their qualification for the 2018 FIVB U19 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Nanjing, China, from July 10-15.

Men’s Category

“It feels pretty awesome,” exclaimed Brewster. “I’ve wanted to travel for the USA for so long. I can’t believe we did it. It’s so awesome. I’m so excited.” Both Brewster and Schwengel had qualified for the 2016 FIVB U17 Worlds, which unfortunately got canceled. Now, they have another opportunity to showcase their skills as they prepare to travel to China. Despite dropping the first set, they displayed resilience and fought their way back.

Dane Johnson-Jason Gibbs secured third place by defeating Eli Margetts-Jacob Titus in straight sets. In the women’s category, Newberry and Sparks emerged victorious in an intense match against Meg Kraft-Maya Harvey. The champions credited their success to preparation and maintaining a positive mindset throughout the tournament.

“We always stayed positive and were never afraid, even if we were behind,” explained Newberry. “We knew what to do with each team when we faced them. I never felt unsure going into any game.”

The women’s bracket featured several closely contested matches, including a thrilling semifinal that saw Kraft-Harvey triumph over Maple-Kriz in a match that went the distance. In the end, Kraft-Harvey claimed the silver medal, while Maple-Kriz secured the bronze medal by defeating Olivia Bakos-Peri Brennan.
