Eight players from the U.S. Paralympic gold medal women’s sitting volleyball team are participating in the World ParaVolley World Super 6 tournament in Hangzou, China this week. This event is significant as it is the first tournament to offer a prize money of USD$20,000. The competition will feature six of the world’s best women’s sitting volleyball teams. U.S. Head Coach Bill Hamiter expressed his excitement about the opportunity that sitting teams are receiving.

The U.S. team consists of ten players, with eight players from the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Team that won gold in Rio de Janeiro. The remaining two players are newcomers. It’s worth noting that starting setter Kaleho (Kanahele) Maclay will be playing in this tournament while pregnant, making it her last tournament of the year.

The U.S. team will face challenging opponents such as Japan, China, Ukraine, Netherlands, and Russia during the tournament. The medal matches will take place on May 21. This tournament will also mark the first meeting between the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team and China since their encounter in the 2016 Paralympic gold medal match.

Coached by Bill Hamiter, the U.S. Women’s Sitting Team is comprised of talented players including Heather Erickson, Monique Burkland, Tia Edwards, Kari Miller, Nicky Nieves, Lexi Shifflett, Bethany Zummo, Courtney Baker, and Whitney Dosty. In Maclay’s absence, Shifflett will take over as the starting setter.
