WNT Update: Lanier Shines with 20 Points for Conegliano

The U.S. Women’s Update is here to keep fans in the loop about the athletes who showcased their skills during the 2023 season in Anaheim. This week, the U.S. players made their mark on teams around the world.

Italy

Prosseco Doc Imoco Conegliano (12-0), featuring outside hitters Kelsey (Robinson) Cook, Khalia Lanier, and Kathryn Plummer, along with setter Madi Bugg, went the distance to secure a victory over Wash4green Pinerolo on December 17th (25-21, 24-26, 25-14, 23-25, 15-13). Avery Skinner and Madi Kingdon Rishel were instrumental in Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri ’76’s (7-5) win over Honda Olivero S.Bernardo Cuneo (4-8) on December 17th (25-18, 25-19, 17-25, 26-24). Skinner scored 13 points, while Kingdon Rishel contributed 11 points to secure the victory.

Türkiye

VakifBank (11-1), boasting outside hitter Ali Frantti, middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu, and opposite Jordan Thompson, emerged as the silver medalists at the Women’s Club World Champs in Hangzhou, China, from December 12th to 18th.

In the semifinals on December 16th, VakifBank defeated Tianjin Bohai Bank from China in a commanding 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-23, 25-23). Thompson and Frantti showcased their skills, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively. Ogbogu provided a strong defensive presence with four points.

Although VakifBank fell short in the final against Türkiye’s VakifBank’s Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul, losing 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9), Thompson’s outstanding performance led all scorers with 33 points. Ogbogu added 16 points, while Frantti contributed four points.

On December 22nd, VakifBank continued their dominance with a 3-1 victory over Kuzeyboru, thanks to a standout performance by Frantti, who led all scorers with 22 points. Thompson and Ogbogu also played vital roles in securing the win.

Germany

Justine Wong-Orantes and SC Potsdam (6-4) battled hard but fell short against Dresdner SC in a thrilling 3-2 match on December 16th (24-26, 25-17, 25-19, 24-26, 15-11). Wong-Orantes showcased her exceptional skills with 25 receptions, 40 percent of which were positive. Danielle Harbin also made her presence felt, scoring 14 points on 10 kills and four aces.

Kayla Haneline and Allianz MTV Stuttgart (9-1) secured a victory against VC Wiesbaden on December 16th (25-12, 25-20, 24-26, 25-15). Haneline contributed two points as a substitute, while Alexis Hart led all scorers with 18 points.

Japan, Brazil, France, Romania

Annie Drews and JT Marvelous fought hard but were unable to overcome the NEC Red Rockets, losing in the semifinals of the Empress Cup on December 16th (25-17, 25-23, 29-27).

Brionne Butler and Osasco Sao Cristovao Saude (5-2) triumphed over Associação Atlética São Caetano in a straight-set victory on December 18th (25-15, 25-14, 25-17). Butler played a significant role, scoring seven points.

Taylor Mims and Nantes (9-1) dominated Quimper in a 3-0 victory on December 19th (25-21, 25-13, 25-18). Mims contributed seven points to her team’s success, while Shannon Coughlin led Quimper with nine points.

Ashley Evans and CSM Bucuresti (7-4) faced a tough challenge against CSM Corona Brasov, losing 3-1 on December 16th (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20). Evans showcased her skills with three points.
