WNT Update: Exciting Victories in Italian Cup

It has been an eventful week for U.S. players competing for professional clubs worldwide. In Italy, the Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano, featuring outside hitters Kelsey Cook and Kathryn Plummer, along with opposite Stephanie Sameday, emerged as the champions of the Italian Cup on January 29. They defeated Vero Volley Milano, which included outside hitter Jordan Larson, opposite Jordan Thompson, and middle blocker Dana Rettke, in a thrilling 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-23, 25-19).

Conegliano’s Cook and Plummer showcased their talent, each contributing 10 points to the team’s success. Cook displayed an impressive hitting efficiency of .500 and recorded 17 receptions with a positive rate of 76 percent. Plummer, on the other hand, scored on nine kills and one block, with a positive reception rate of 68 percent. It’s worth noting that Sameday, the new addition to Conegliano’s roster, did not participate in the tournament. Thompson led the charge for Milano with 17 points, including 16 kills and one block, while Larson contributed two points through kills and had a positive reception rate of 71 percent. Rettke made an impact as a substitute, scoring two points on two blocks.

Conegliano continued their winning streak in the regular season by defeating Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri in a thrilling 3-2 victory (25-27, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-9) on February 4. Cook shone in the last three sets, scoring 11 points with nine kills, one block, and one ace. Plummer played as a substitute and contributed one point through a kill. It is worth mentioning that Butler, playing for Chieri, made significant contributions as a substitute.

Vero Volley Milano secured a victory against Bartoccini-Fortinfissi Perugia in a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-20, 26-24, 25-11) on February 4. Rettke’s exceptional performance stood out, as she led the team with 18 points, including eight blocks, nine kills, and one ace. Larson also delivered a solid performance, contributing 15 points through 10 kills, three blocks, and two aces. Thompson made an impact in the fourth set, scoring five points on four kills and one block.

Carli Lloyd, the setter for E-Work Busto Arsizio, unfortunately experienced a defeat against Igor Gorgonzola Novara in a tightly contested match, which ended 3-2 (17-25, 26-24, 23-25, 26-24, 15-10) on February 4. Lloyd managed to score three points with two kills and one block, while American outside hitter McKenzie Adams led Novara with an impressive 19 points, including 16 kills and three blocks.

Volley Bergamo, with the talented outside hitter Mac May, secured a hard-earned victory against Cuneo Granda S.Bernardo in a thrilling 3-2 win (25-20, 19-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-10) on February 5. May made an impact by contributing two points through kills, while Anna Hall, playing for Cuneo Granda S.Bernardo, scored 10 points on nine kills and one block. It’s worth noting that Dani Drews, although on the roster for Bernardo, did not play in the match.

Megabox Ond. Savio Vallefoglia, featuring opposite Annie Drews and setter Micha Hancock, celebrated a victory against Wash4green Pinerolo in a 3-1 win (29-27, 15-25, 28-26, 25-16). Drews delivered an impressive performance, scoring 14 points through 13 kills and one ace. Hancock made significant contributions, scoring five points with four kills and one ace, while setting her team to an impressive .320 hitting efficiency.

Savino Del Bene Scandicci, with middle Haleigh Washington, emerged victorious against Trasportipesanti Casalmaggiore, which included setter Lauren Carlini and outside hitter Ali Frantti, in a 3-1 win (17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21) on February 4. Washington showcased her skills, contributing 12 points through nine kills and three blocks. Frantti led her team’s offense with an outstanding performance, scoring 20 points through 18 kills and two blocks. Carlini also made her mark by scoring nine points with seven kills and two blocks, setting her team to an impressive .304 hitting efficiency.

Il Bisonte Firenze, featuring middle Rhamat Alhassan, secured a victory against Cbf Balducci Hr Macerata in a convincing 3-0 win (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) on January 5. Alhassan’s significant contributions came in the third set, where she scored seven points through five kills and two blocks.
