WNT Update: Headed for Champions League Quarterfinals

Two teams with U.S. players have advanced to the CEV Champions League quarterfinals, and another U.S. player is headed to the final of the Challenge Cup. CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Türkiye’s VakifBank, featuring outside hitter Ali Frantti, middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu, and opposite Jordan Thompson, has secured their place in the Champions League quarterfinals. They won two playoff matches against Poland’s PGE Rysice Rzeszow to advance. In the second match on February 7, VakifBank emerged victorious with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-23) win. Frantti led the team with 12 points, Thompson scored 10 points, and Ogbogu contributed eight points. Now, they are set to face Italy’s Prosseco Doc Imoco Conegliano, which also boasts a talented roster of U.S. players, in the quarterfinals.

Germany’s Allianz MTV Stuttgart, with middle Kayla Haneline and libero Justine Wong-Orantes, has also secured their spot in the quarterfinals after winning two matches against Germany’s SC Potsdam. In their second match on February 7, Stuttgart emerged victorious with a 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-22) win. Haneline and Wong-Orantes made significant contributions to their team’s success. Stuttgart will now face Türkiye’s Fenerbahce Opet in the quarterfinals.

CEV CUP

Italy’s Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri ’76, featuring outside hitters Avery Skinner and Madi Kingdon Rishel, has advanced to the semifinals of the CEV Cup. They won two thrilling five-set matches against France’s Volero Le Cannet. In the second match on July 2, Chieri emerged victorious with a 3-2 (25-10, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 21-19) win. Skinner led her team with 22 points, while Kingdon Rishel made valuable contributions off the bench. Chieri will now face France’s Levallois Paris Saint Cloud in the semifinals.

CEV CHALLENGE CUP

Opposite Taylor Mims and France’s Neptunes de Nantes have secured their place in the finals of the Challenge Cup after winning two semifinal matches against Türkiye’s Nilüfer Belediye Bursa. In the second match on February 7, Nantes emerged victorious with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16) win. Mims and U.S. middle Jaelyn Keene played a vital role in their team’s success. Nantes will now face Italy’s Igor Gorgonzola Novara in the finals.

PRO VOLLEYBALL FEDERATION

In other news, the Omaha Supernovas hosted and defeated the San Diego Mojo with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) victory. Setter Sydney Hilley showcased her skills by directing the Supernovas’ offense and contributing to the team’s success. Libero Kendall White led the match with her exceptional defensive plays, and former WNT middle Tori Dixon made valuable contributions to the team’s victory.
