USAV Takes Leadership Role in Beach ParaVolley

USA Volleyball is making a significant commitment to Beach ParaVolley (Standing), a relatively new discipline that could see more Team USA athletes competing at the Paralympic Games. The USA Volleyball Board of Directors has confirmed its designation as the official national federation for Beach ParaVolley. This move comes as World ParaVolley (WPV), the international federation for Paralympic volleyball, works with the International Paralympic Committee to include Beach ParaVolley in the Paralympic Games by the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.

Since 2007, Beach ParaVolley has gained popularity in Asia/Oceania, where teams have been competing regularly. The Paralympic classification system promotes inclusivity in the sport, allowing for a maximum of one Classification A athlete (most physically able). Aside from that, Beach ParaVolley largely follows the standard FIVB Beach Volleyball rules.

To kick off its competition year, USA Volleyball Beach ParaVolley will participate in the 2019 Pingtan Beach World Series Open event held in Pingtan, Fushou, China from May 9th to 12th. The tournament is open to teams of any gender or mixed teams.

To find the best talent, USA Volleyball will hold a Beach ParaVolley Selection Camp from April 4th to 7th at the University of Central Oklahoma. This camp is aimed at selecting six potential three-member teams to represent the USA at the Pingtan event. Athletes selected for this camp will also take part in a pre-tournament training camp from May 2nd to 4th at UCO before heading to China.

To build the Beach ParaVolley pipeline further, USA Volleyball will host three additional Beach Paralympic training camps on June 6th to 9th, July 11th to 14th, and August 1st to 4th. These camps will be held at various locations and will provide more opportunities for athletes to develop their skills in Beach ParaVolley.

Jon Aharoni and Dan Mickle, experienced coaches in beach volleyball, will lend their expertise to the Beach ParaVolley program. Aharoni has been the head coach for the USA Beach Youth Volleyball Team for eight years and has a wealth of coaching experience. Mickle, a former champion and player on professional tours, brings his vast knowledge of the game to help guide and train athletes.

As part of their efforts to promote Beach ParaVolley, USA Volleyball plans to hold a clinic on June 9th at UCO in conjunction with the Endeavor Games. This clinic will provide an opportunity for players of all levels to learn and participate in this exciting and inclusive sport.
