U.S. Women’s Volleyball Team Shines at Pan Am Cup Final Six

The U.S. Women’s National Team has emerged victorious, claiming the gold medal at the 2023 NORCECA Pan Am Cup Final Six in a thrilling display of skill and determination. The team went undefeated, culminating in a stunning 3-1 victory (24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21) over the host country, the Dominican Republic, in Santo Domingo.

One standout player from the U.S. team was outside hitter Simone Lee, who was not only named Best Attacker but also received the tournament’s MVP award. Lee’s remarkable performance included 29 points, with 26 kills, three blocks, 19 successful receptions, and six digs, showcasing her versatility and dominance on the court. Her exceptional hitting efficiency of .386 further solidified her impact on the game.

The U.S. team as a whole delivered an impressive performance, with a team hitting percentage of .371 and a notable advantage of 68-52 in kills. Moreover, they showcased their defensive prowess by leading in blocks with a score of 12-7 and recording three out of four aces in the match.

Outside hitter Sarah Wilhite Parsons played an essential role, contributing 18 points through 12 kills, four aces, 20 successful receptions, and 10 digs. Opposite Taylor Mims and middle blocker Madeleine Gates also made significant contributions, with Mims scoring 14 points and Gates scoring 13 points.

Libero Zoe Fleck demonstrated exceptional defensive skills, leading the team with 11 digs and 11 successful receptions. Additionally, middle blocker Kayla Haneline contributed eight points by securing five kills and three blocks.

The match was a back-and-forth battle, particularly in the first set, where the Dominican Republic took a three-point lead after a powerful 6-1 run. The U.S. fought back, but ultimately the hosts secured the set with back-to-back points. Parsons played a crucial role by scoring six points, including three kills and three blocks.

In the second set, Lee’s exceptional performance shone through with nine points, including seven kills and two blocks. The U.S. maintained a comfortable lead, with the Dominican Republic narrowing the gap, but ultimately falling short. The U.S. responded with three consecutive points and maintained a lead of at least five points for the remainder of the set.

The U.S. took control early in the third set, establishing a 9-3 lead. Although the Dominican Republic attempted to close the gap, the U.S. held their ground, thanks to several key plays, including three kills by Lee, two kills on overpasses by Gates, and a critical pancake dig by Jenna Gray.

In the fourth set, the Dominican Republic initially gained a 7-3 lead, but the U.S. quickly turned the tables with six consecutive points. Mims sealed the victory with a significant kill, putting the U.S. two points away from the gold medal. Lee’s final point secured the gold for the team.

In the other matches, Cuba secured the bronze medal by defeating Mexico in four sets, while Canada emerged victorious against Puerto Rico in the fifth-place match.

The U.S. Women’s Roster for the 2023 NORCECA Final 6 consisted of a talented group of players representing different regions of the United States. The team was led by head coach Brad Rostratter, with support from assistant coaches Jonathan Charette and Cursty Jackson, as well as team manager/performance analyst Peter Wong and athletic trainer Mandolyn Peterson.
