U.S. Women Play Red-Blue for Electrifying Crowd

The U.S. Women’s National Team recently showcased their talent in a thrilling Red-Blue intrasquad match in Murrieta, California. The event drew a sold-out crowd of 1,600 enthusiastic fans at Murrieta Mesa High School, creating an electrifying atmosphere.

The players donned red and blue jerseys, while the set scores remained close throughout the match. The intensity of the contest was evident in the scores – 25-22, 27-25, 34-36, 27-25 – with the outcome determined to go four sets.

U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “I loved the way we battled tonight. Everybody fought hard, even when there were leads. The team that fell in the hole worked really hard to get back. We had some fantastic battles.”

The atmosphere in the gymnasium was electric, with constant noise from the passionate fans. U.S. Women’s National Team captain Christa Dietzen commended the school district for their promotion of the event and the support shown by the local community. She said, “It is awesome that the school spirit is here at Murrieta Mesa. What an awesome event to come and play in.”

Several players stood out during the match. Outside hitter Jordan Larson led all scorers with 21 points, including three aces and three blocks. Kim Hill and Alexis Crimes also made significant contributions, each scoring 17 points. Crimes particularly impressed with 11 blocks. In total, the two squads combined for 30 blocks and 14 aces. Team USA displayed a 40.4% kill percentage, utilizing their four different setters effectively.

Coach Kiraly emphasized the importance of the atmosphere for the team’s preparation ahead of international tournaments. He stated, “An amazing atmosphere – very Olympic-like – including making a lot of noise like we can expect in Brazil, China, and Thailand. They helped us train for some conditions that we can expect in tournaments later this summer.”

To simulate playing in foreign venues, the coaching staff encouraged the crowd to cheer for one side and boo the other. The players adapted well to the unfamiliar environment, and the experience proved valuable in their development.

The U.S. Women’s National Team will continue their preparations with another Red-Blue intrasquad match at Santiago Canyon College in Orange County on May 27. This rare doubleheader will also feature the U.S. Men’s Red-Blue match, providing fans with an exciting evening of volleyball.
