U.S. Women Continue Winning Streak at VNL

The U.S. Women’s National Team has kicked off their Volleyball Nations League (VNL) campaign with an impressive 4-0 record. In their latest match, they triumphed over host team Türkiye with a thrilling 3-2 victory (25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 11-25, 15-9) in Antalya. This win marks their third five-set victory out of the first four matches.

The match drew a crowd of approximately 10,500 spectators at the Antalya Arena, including U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Jeff Flake and his wife Cheryl. The U.S. team’s opposite Annie Drews expressed her awe of the Turkish fans’ passion for volleyball, describing the experience as truly special and one that she will remember for a long time.

A Hard-Fought Battle

The U.S. Women found themselves in a challenging position after losing the fourth set, but they displayed resilience and determination. Drews stated that the team knew they needed to take it one step at a time and started their climb out of the difficult situation.

Despite Turkey leading in blocks (13-3) and aces (8-3), the U.S. team maintained their composure. They secured the win by outscoring Turkey in kills (62-61) and capitalizing on Turkish errors, earning 30 points while only losing 21.

Standout Performances

Drews led the U.S. scoring with an impressive 19 points, contributing 17 kills and two aces. Outside hitter Avery Skinner wasn’t far behind, adding 16 points with 16 kills. Khalia Lanier also delivered an excellent performance, scoring 12 points on 11 kills and one ace.

The team’s setter, Micha Hancock, demonstrated her versatility by leading the team in digs with 13. She also contributed four points with three kills and one ace. Libero Justine Wong-Orantes showcased her defensive skills with 12 digs and four successful receptions. Skinner and Lanier each had seven successful receptions.

Other notable contributions came from middle blocker Dana Rettke with nine points, Asjia O’Neal with five points, and Brionne Butler, Danielle Cuttino, and Roni Jones-Perry making appearances as substitutes.

Looking Ahead

The U.S. Women’s National Team will have a short break before their next match. While the U.S. Men will be participating in the VNL matches in Ottawa, Canada from June 7th to 11th, the women will return to the court on June 13th to face Croatia in Brasilia, Brazil.
