U.S. Women Lose First Pan Am Cup Match

The U.S. Women’s Pan American Cup Team experienced a setback in their first match of the tournament, as they were defeated by the host country, the Dominican Republic, with a score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-13).

Despite a strong start in the first set, the U.S. Women’s team faced challenges as errors piled up and the Dominican Republic’s formidable performance overpowered them.

“The Dominican Republic is a very talented team,” commented U.S. Head Coach Karch Kiraly. “They outperformed us today, and things didn’t go as we had anticipated.”

The Dominican Republic outperformed the U.S. in kills (32-28), blocks (10-5), and aces (5-1). The U.S. team made 28 scoring errors compared to the Dominican Republic’s 16.

Roni Jones-Perry, the team’s outside hitter, led the U.S. scoring effort with 10 points, comprising of nine kills and one block. Danielle Cuttino, the starting opposite, contributed nine points through nine kills.

Rachel Kramer, the middle blocker, scored seven points with three kills, three blocks, and one ace. Symone Williams-Abbott, the outside hitter, totaled four points from four kills. Shelly Stafford, another middle blocker, scored with two kills and one block. Alex Holston, the backup opposite, secured one point with a kill.

Backup setter Elle Glock also saw playing time in the match.
