Top Select Wins GJNC18 Open Division

ANAHEIM, California (April 29, 2018) – Top Select 18 Elite Blake (Florida Region) achieved an impressive victory on the final day of the 2018 USA Volleyball Girls 18s Junior National Championships (GJNC18). They emerged as champions in the 18 Open Division, joining four other teams who secured divisional titles at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

A Record-Breaking Event

The GJNC18 showcased a staggering number of 296 teams and approximately 3,000 of the most talented 18-and-under athletes in the country. These young athletes eagerly competed for one of five championships. This renowned event was held in Anaheim, the official host city for the U.S. Women’s and Men’s National Volleyball Teams.

Triumph in the 18 Open Division

In the 18 Open Division championship match, Top Select 18 Elite Blake demonstrated great resilience after losing the opening set. They rallied back to defeat San Antonio Magic 18 Elite (Lone Star Region) in a hard-fought match, with a final score of 26-28, 25-19, 18-16. Top Select had to persevere through four championship match points before securing their well-deserved victory.

It was an impressive journey for Top Select, as they overcame an initial loss and a 2-2 start in pool play. They found their stride when it counted the most. In the challenge match, they defeated reigning GJNC18 champions KC Power 18-1 (Heart of America Region) to earn a spot in the gold bracket. Top Select continued their winning streak by defeating SG Elite 18 Roshambo (Southern California Region) in the quarterfinals and TAV 18 Black (North Texas Region) in the hard-fought semifinals. With a final record of 7-2, Top Select won their last five matches to claim the championship.

Shannon Crenshaw, who has committed to playing with the University of Washington next fall, was rightfully awarded the 18 Open Division Most Valuable Player. Reflecting on the team’s victory, Crenshaw expressed her amazement and gratitude. “We came into this tournament just hoping for the best. This is such a great surprise to us. We have worked so hard for the past four years, and it is amazing that all the hard work has paid off.”

Crenshaw herself was caught off guard when she received the MVP award. “It means so much to me. I would never have expected anything like this. Everything that has happened I think has happened for a reason. I just played my heart out with my girls.”

With their successful performance at GJNC18, Crenshaw and her teammates have concluded their club careers on a high note before transitioning to college. Crenshaw expressed her confidence in being well-trained and prepared for the next chapter of her volleyball journey.
