Men’s Volleyball: Looking Ahead to 2017

The summer of 2016 may have just ended, but it’s never too early to start contemplating what’s next in the world of men’s volleyball. With the U.S. Men’s National Team tying with Poland for the No. 2 spot in the FIVB rankings after their bronze-medal finish at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Exciting Plans for 2017

The U.S. Men’s National Team is gearing up for the 2017 FIVB World League, where they aim to improve upon their fifth-place finish in the previous year. The tournament will retain the format used in 2016, featuring three weekends of pool play before the top five teams, along with the host country, advance to the Final Round.

Pool Play Schedule

The U.S. team’s pool play matches will be held on the following weekends:

  1. June 2-4: Serbia, Canada, and Belgium.
  2. June 9-11: France, Russia, and Italy.
  3. June 16-18: Poland, Russia, and Iran.

While the U.S. won’t be hosting a World League weekend in 2017, they are tentatively scheduled to host the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship in August, providing an opportunity for fans to witness their favorite players in action on home soil.

U.S. Players in International Leagues

As the 2017 season approaches, several U.S. players have already made their mark playing in international leagues. Max Holt and Brian Cook have had impressive performances for Azimut Modena in Italy’s Serie A League, while James Shaw and Taylor Averill are showcasing their skills for Kioene Padova. Erik Shoji and Kawika Shoji are part of the undefeated Lokomotiv Novosibirsk team in Russia’s SuperLeague, and Matt Anderson is making waves as he returns to Zenit Kazan.

Polish Adventures

David Smith and Dustin Watten are making a name for themselves in Poland, playing for Cerrad Czarni Radom. Jonah Seif and Kyle Russell are making their mark for MKS Będzin, while Scott Touzinsky is contributing to Jastrzębski Węgiel’s success.
