MaKenzie Franklin: Overcoming Challenges and Embracing New Adventures

MaKenzie Franklin, a player for the U.S. Women’s National Sitting Team, has shown incredible resilience and determination since losing her leg in a motorcycle accident. Now, she is embarking on a new adventure, joining a team of amputees, veterans, athletes, and humanitarians to climb Ecuador’s 18,996-foot volcano Cayambe. This expedition, organized by the Range of Motion Project (ROMP), aims to provide prosthetic care to those in need.

A Journey of Perseverance and Passion

After the accident, Franklin discovered sitting volleyball and decided to pursue it. Her dedication paid off, and she earned a spot on the U.S. Women’s Sitting National team. She made her competitive debut at the ParaVolley Pan America Zonal Championship, where the U.S. secured a berth to the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Balancing Volleyball and Climbing

Franklin’s commitment to volleyball has helped her prepare for the climb. Alongside her volleyball training, she participates in strength training and skills workouts. Walking has also been an essential part of her routine, gradually becoming easier as she adapts to her prosthetic leg. However, cardio exercises pose a challenge, and she is exploring the possibility of getting a climbing foot to enhance her climbing experience.
