Beach Update: Medal Success in Mexico and Martinique

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Oct. 30, 2018) – The team of Caitlin Ledoux/Geena Urango made an impressive debut at the FIVB World Tour three-star event in Chetumal, Mexico, securing a silver medal on Oct. 28. Another duo, Brooke Sweat/Kerri Walsh Jennings, also achieved their first World Tour medal as a team in Chetumal, winning bronze.

Solid Performances and Exciting Matches

Ledoux/Urango, seeded 25th, delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament. In the gold-medal match, they faced Canada’s formidable No. 1 seeded team, Brandie Wilkerson/Heather Bansley, and showed their mettle despite falling to a 21-12, 21-13 defeat.

Sweat/Walsh Jennings, playing only their second tournament as a team, delivered an undefeated run until they met Wilkerson/Bansley in the semifinals. Although they lost 21-18, 21-17, they bounced back in the third-place match, defeating Canadian sisters Megan and Nicole McNamara with a score of 16-21, 21-8, 15-10.

Walsh Jennings expressed her pride in the team’s performance, stating, “Losing always hurts, but for us to be able to come back and win our first medal against a very good team, it’s really special. We hope we can keep improving and winning more medals.”

Ledoux/Urango showcased their determination and resilience. Reflecting on their impressive journey in the World Tour, Ledoux said, “For our first tournament together, we are having a great experience, and to come this far is impressive. It has been a great tournament, and I’m really proud of us so far.”

Urango highlighted their focus on teamwork and execution, stating, “Against Canada, we kept focusing on our side. We have our tough serve and a good pass-set, and these are the things we can control.”

In the thrilling women’s final on Oct. 28, Spieler/Cook triumphed over Canada’s Sophie Bukovec/Alexandria Poletto with a score of 21-18, 20-22, 15-12. The U.S. team of Victoria Dennis/Melissa Fuchs finished in fifth place.
